Acme Inc was founded in 1957 by Roger Tunsdale, a machinist who worked at the Hudson Motor Car Company in Detroit. After being laid off in the restructuring that occurred when Hudson merged with Nash-Kelvinator to form AMC in 1954, Tunsdale worked as a tool and die maker at various companies throughout the Midwest.
He developed a variety of fixtures that increased productivity and efficiency and caught the attention of Daniel “Spider” Jeffries, the owner of a small job shop in Davenport, Iowa. Jeffries was so impressed with Tunsdale, that he staked him $2000 to start his own business. From these humble beginnings, Acme, Inc was born.
Acme thrived under Tunsdale’s leadership and later that of his son and grandson. Acme was a leader in early laser and water jet cutting technology and an early adapter of 3D additive machinery
Acme was purchased last year by E.W. Brolly, a global leader in machine tool and automation technology, based out of Puddleton, England. The strength of this partnership will allow Acme to continue in its mission of building a better mousetrap
